John Bowe has his sights set on improved fortune tomorrow after a day of set-backs at the GMC 400 in Canberra today.

The Cat Racing team's day began badly when the #600 car was put to the rear of the grid for a technical infringement.

Series officials alleged an oil cooler mount beneath the #600 car could have provided an aerodynamic advantage.

Bowe and the Cat team were to appeal against the decision, but were informed by officials that any such appeal could not be heard before the Top 15 shoot-out.

>From the rear of the grid, Bowe made a barnstorming start, moving up to 18th spot after only 11 laps.

The team also made its compulsory pit-stop after lap two, just before a safety car period.

Bowe's dramatic fightback came to a hault shortly after when he tagged the rear of Craig Baird's Falcon coming on to the start-finish straight.

The resulting damage to the front of the #600 machine forced Bowe to switch off the car with engine temperatures rising dramatically.

"To say we haven't had a great day is a bit of an understatement," Bowe said.

"Being put to the rear of the grid was very tough, but the boys came up with a great strategy that had put us in a really good position.

"I think Craig (Baird) must have lifted off to go into the pits. The last thing I would try and do is deliberately punt somebody off - particularly with so much concrete around."

Holden driver Greg Murphy won the event from Jason Bargwanna and Steven Richards - all of whom joined Bowe in pitting on lap two.

"We had a brilliant strategy and it is times like these when you wonder - what if?" Bowe said.

"If we didn't have to start from the rear and if we hadn't got tangled up with Craig, we could have won the race.

"Unfortunately, ifs, buts and maybes don't count in this sport. We have to put our head down and try again tomorrow."

By not finishing, Bowe will again have to start from the rear of the grid for the second race tomorrow. <pre> RACE ONE - 25 laps 1. - Murphy (Holden) - 1:00:13.320 2. - Bargwanna (Holden) - 1:00:23.036 3. - Richards (Holden) - 1:00:23.228 4. - Ingall (Holden) - 1:00:23.785 5. - Weel (Ford) - 1:00:43.903 6. - McDougal (Holden) - 1:00:46.041 7. - Poole (Holden) - 1:00:46.423 8. - Reed (Holden) - 1:00:46:887 9. - Crompton (Ford) - 1:00:47.229 10. - Ashby (Holden) - 1:00:49.406
