Cat Racing's John Bowe came within two corners of picking up a podium position in the second V8 Supercar race today at the Australian Grand Prix.
After starting from position eight, Bowe picked his through the carnage at the front end of the field to settle into third spot in the early laps.
He then chased down Russell Ingall to grab second spot and held that position for much of the race.
However, problems with a fuel pump late in the race forced Bowe to switch to the auxiliary pump, briefly delaying his progress and enabling Steven Richards and team-mate Glen Seton to get a run on him.
Richards got through, but Bowe look set to hold out Seton until the penultimate corner.
"I certainly had the line covered and was right over on the edge of the road, but he came from nowhere and slammed me in the left rear," Bowe said.
"It really wasn't unnecessary. There was certainly no room down there, but it didn't stop him having a go. We ended up with a flat tyre, bent rim and a bent diff housing.
"As a result of that, neither of us finished on the podium - I don't think it was very smart."
Despite the late race disappointment, Bowe was still pleased with the progress of the car.
"I am really annoyed we didn't end up on the podium, but the pleasing aspect is the fact that we improved the car," Bowe said.
"It is still hard on the tyres, but it looked after its tyres a lot better than yesterday.
"The car was pretty consistent and we were looking pretty good for a spot on the podium before the fuel pump gave a little glitch."
Today's race was won by Ford's Paul Radisich ahead of Steven Richards and Craig Lowndes. In fact, eight of the top ten finishes were aboard the Blue Oval marque.
"We have one more run tomorrow and I think we should be in good shape. The hard part will be to keep away from the lunacy which seems to have hit half the field," Bowe said.
