Cat Racing's John Bowe will start from position twelve in the second leg of the Clipsal 500 after enduring a battered opening 250km event on the streets of Adelaide today.
Bowe was running strongly in fifth position with 20 laps to go when brake problems began to hinder the Tasmanian's progress.
After dropping three spots in the next ten laps, Bowe was then forced into the tyre wall by Holden driver Todd Kelly at the end of the main straight.
Bowe was able to reverse out and continue to finish 12th.
"I have been punted off the road in every championship round so far this year and I am getting a little tired of it," Bowe said.
"Our strategy had worked pretty well but the brakes started to fade after about 18 laps.
"It was really hard to maintain the race pace and hold everybody at bay."
The Cat Racing Falcon suffered heavy panel damage, but is expected to be fully repaired in time for tomorrow's race.
Bowe made his first pit stop for tyres on lap 31 of the 78 lap event. The stop fortunately came just prior to the first safety car period - Bowe having to re-enter the pits to replace the left front wheel which had gone flat.
The team's progress was hindered by a long safety car period on lap 59 when the Falcon of Brad Jones dramatically rolled.
The race was won by Holden driver Craig Lowndes after a great fight with Ford rival, Glenn Seton.
"Our car was pretty good today but we are going to have to do something about the brakes for tomorrow," Bowe said.
"I was pretty lucky to be able to get the car out of the tyre wall and keep going but it was a pretty disappointing end to the day.
"In the end, we were lucky not to suffer a flat tyre because the right rear rim had a huge chunk missing out of it.
"AVESCO are supposed to be clamping down on this type of driving‡ but nothing seems to be done about it." <pre> CLIPSAL 500 - DAY ONE 1. - Lowndes (Holden) - 2:09:49.829 2. - Seton (Ford) - 2:09:53.473 3. - Tander (Holden) - 2:09:58.741 4. - Richards (Holden) - 2:10:00.921 5. - Radisich (Ford) - 2:10:03.140 6. - Johnson (Ford) - 2:10:12.510 7. - Bargwanna (Holden) - 2:10:12.541 8. - Murphy (Holden) - 2:10:15.115 9. - Longhurst (Ford) - 2:10:24.411 10. - Faulkner (Holden) - 2:10:30.467 11. - Kelly (Holden) - 2:10:50.521 12. - BOWE (CAT FORD) - 2:11:01.896
