Matt Campbell was a surprise participant in today’s V8 Supercars test at Winton, taking the wheel of Todd Kelly’s Nissan Altima.
The young Queenslander took the wheel of the #7 Carsales entry during the lunchtime shift at the rural Victorian circuit, cutting his first laps in an Altima V8 Supercar.
While the test was kept quiet by the Nissan squad, it could have big implications come endurance season.
Nissan is expected to name an almost unchanged line-up for the three enduros, with David Russell, Taz Douglas, and Dean Fiore all expecting to be retained, but there is still a question mark over the fourth driver.
Should Nissan decide against bringing out one of its international stars to complete its line-up, as it did last year with Alex Buncombe, then Campbell could well be in with a shot of a seat for Sandown, Bathurst, and the Gold Coast.
Campbell is best known for his impressive form in both Australian GT and Carrera Cup racing. Last year he finished third in Carrera Cup Australia, taking two wins at Sydney Motorsport Park, one at Bathurst, and three on the Gold Coast.
Nissan also gave Fiore a run in Michael Caruso's #23 Altima at Winton today.
