V8 SUPERCAR - SHELL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES RACE DAY - CALDER PARK - ROUND EIGHT ISSUED: SUNDAY, 25th JULY 1999

BOWE AND CAT RACING CLAIM FIRST V8 SUPERCAR PODIUM

Cat Racing took another step towards becoming a force in Australian V8 Supercar racing after John Bowe claimed the team's first championship round podium result.

Bowe used his experience to good effect to record seventh in the opening race, and then backed that up with two third positions to complete the day.

The Cat star then joined round winner Mark Skaife and runner-up Garth Tander on the podium in third place for the day.

Bowe was lucky to escape a huge multi-car crash on the opening lap of race two which eliminated Championship leader Craig Lowndes.

Dramatic in-car camera footage showed Bowe just missing a huge piece of debris which flew over the top of the car.

Lowndes' Holden Commodore was destroyed after barrel-rolling off the circuit. Neil Crompton and Steven Richards were also eliminated in the incident. Fortunately, no drivers were injured in the crash.

"I am just delighted for the team because they really deserve this success," a champagne soaked Bowe said afterwards.

"Keeping our nose clean was the secret today. It was almost like driving through a bomb scene in that second race. I could see Lowndes' car rolling on the left and Crompton was shunted off to the right."

The result caps off a perfect week after winning an appeal against it's last round race victory exclusion upheld on Thursday.

"We have been in the position to climb the podium at other times during the year, but this is the first time our luck has come together," Bowe said.

"We changed the car after the first race and it was a lot better in the rear end. We actually went the wrong way with the set-up for the last race but I was able to hang on.

"The team is thrilled with the result and I am delighted for Caterpillar. With their head office just down the road from here, this is actually home territory for Cat."
