V8 SUPERCAR - SHELL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES QUALIFYING - CALDER PARK - ROUND EIGHT ISSUED: SATURDAY, 24th JULY 1999
BOWE CHARGES INTO TOP SIX AFTER TROUBLED PRACTICE
After a troubled morning practice, John Bowe manhandled his Cat Racing Ford Falcon AU to break into the top six in qualifying for round eight of the V8 Supercar Shell Championship Series at Calder Park today.
Unhappy with the handling in the morning sessions, Bowe and the Cat team improved the car for the single 15 minute qualifying session, moving up to 6th at the very end of the session.
Bowe bounced his way over the Calder Park kerbs to finish only .25 of a second behind pole sitter Jason Bright. The top 20 cars in the field were covered by only 1 second!
"We made a lot of changes to the car after the morning sessions and it still wasn't perfect during qualifying," Bowe said.
"I am pleased to have moved into the top six, but we have still yet to find the perfect set-up for this track.
"Calder has a tendancy to be a bit of a demolition derby and your chances are certainly helped by being further up the grid."
Bowe is keen to try further changes to the car in the morning warm-up to try to recapture his race winning pace from Queensland Raceway.
"The car is still very loose in the rear and not putting its power down very well," Bowe said.
"We've got to make some more changes overnight and try to come up with a consistent race package for tomorrow.
"Our tyres are not graining like the previous round which is promising and the main aim will be to try to keep our nose clean in the first race.
"All the corners at Calder are reasonably slow so it is hard to get a run on somebody to try to pull off a passing move.
"That's when people can overstep the mark and you can get taken out in somebody else's accident."
The top 14 cars all qualified under Craig Lowndes existing lap record.
Holden driver Craig Lowndes will start alongside Bright on the front row with Mark Skaife and Russell Ingall on the second row.
