Bowe Looks Forward To Calder V8 Supercar Challenge
Cat Racing star John Bowe is ready to contest the final sprint races of the 2001 V8 Supercar season at Calder Park this weekend.
With the majority of this year's events including pit-stops, Calder and the previous round at Barbagallo in Perth are the only rounds to retain the 3 x 20 minute heat format from last year.
In what amounts to a home race for the team with major sponsor Caterpillar located at nearby Tullamarine, Bowe is confident of a strong showing but believes the event will be a tough challenge.
"Calder is very hard to pass on at the best of times, and with three 20 minute sprints it is going to be really tough to try to make ground if you do not qualify well," Bowe said.
"The secret to Calder is good straight line speed and getting good traction out of the slow corners. Power-down is of paramount importance, especially coming onto the main straight.
"It can be quite tricky through there because of the rubber left on the track from the drag racing and even trickier if it gets a little damp.
"Knowing Melbourne weather anything is possible."
Bowe has some great memories of the Calder circuit including doing battle with the likes of Alain Prost at the two Australian Grand Prix events held there in the early 80s for Formula Mondiale cars.
"It is strange to think we used to do battle with Alain Prost and co on the short circuit," Bowe said.
"Taking a look at the short track now it makes the old Winton look like the Nurburgring!"
Bowe is confident of a strong showing against the local Melbourne-based teams which regularly test at the circuit.
"There are a lot of Melbourne based teams which test at the track and they are going to have a big advantage," Bowe said.
"We ended up on the podium a couple of years ago with the Cat car the year Craig Lowndes had his big accident, but it is going to be a tough ask.
"However, if we can sneak out a good qualifying lap anything is possible." <pre> CALDER RECORD: Career @ Calder Round Wins: 0 Heat Wins: 0 Pole Positions: 0 Best Result: 2nd 1996
