IF recent form is any guide then the CAT Racing combination of John Bowe and Simon Wills should certainly be a contender in this weekend's VIP Petfoods Queensland 500 at Queensland Raceway, near Ipswich.
Both enter the weekend on winning form with Bowe dominating proceedings aboard a Ford Mustang in the GT Performance category at Eastern Creek yesterday and Wills recently capturing the Konica V8 Supercar Series Championship at Mallala in South Australia.
Staged at the team's home circuit at Queensland Raceway, Sunday's 500km endurance test will be the first time the pair of dual Australian Driver's Championship winners have teamed up.
"Both Simon and I both had pretty good races here last year and I think we should make a strong combination," said Bowe.
"Queensland Raceway can be a tricky place, but I am confident we should be in a good position to pull off a good result.
"Long distance races are always very tough because you have to ensure your strategy is spot on.
"Races can be won and lost in the pits and we came up with some very good strategies last year and were the first Ford home.
"Obviously we will be aiming to be the first car home - not just the first Ford."
Bowe said he was confident that this weekend's race will be one of the highlights of this year's Shell Championship Series.
"I think the promoters have been working very hard to ensure everything is spot on," said Bowe.
"They have done a good job getting the message out that the traffic problems experienced at the first event are well and truly fixed and I expect to see a big crowd at the weekend."
Both Bowe and Wills tested at Queensland Raceway recently with the John Briggs
Motorsport squad and Wills is looking forward to teaming-up with the former Australian touring car champion and dual-Bathurst winner.
"This is a great opportunity for me and I am really looking forward to driving with John this weekend," said Wills, who drove in last year's race with Craig Baird.
"Although I have been driving a Commodore all year in the Konica Series, I have also had the chance to do plenty of laps aboard the Cat Falcon.
"Winning the Konica Series was a great boost and I think John and I should combine really well this weekend. These races are always tough, but I think we have a very good shot at it."
