Lowndes sixth in Bathurst shootout
With the front row of the grid to be left unoccupied in memory of the late Peter Brock Team Betta Electrical's car 888 to be driven by Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup will start tomorrow's Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000 from the fourth row after Lowndes recorded the sixth fastest time in this afternoon's Top Ten Shootout at Mount Panorama.
Lowndes time of 2.08.5403 was only a second slower than that set by pole sitter Mark Skaife with the entire shootout lineup separated by less than two seconds.
Earlier in the day all four Team Betta Electrical drivers shared the driving duties during a one hour open practice session which saw the team simulate fuel stops, tyre stops and driver changes.
In preparation for tomorrows 'Great Race' the championship leaders will tonight change the engines and many key components in both Triple Eight Race Engineering prepared Ford Falcon's, a standard procedure undertaken by all V8 Supercar teams ahead of the toughest race of the year.
Lowndes acknowledged he did the best he could but was unable to match to top three.
"The time I got today was the best I could do with the tyres I had," said Lowndes
"Jamie's session this morning was good and we are both looking forward to the 161 laps.
"With the tribute to Peter Brock before the start of the race and the opportunity to drive one of his cars I am excited about racing tomorrow" said Lowndes.
Tomorrow's race day action commences with an early morning warmup from 7.10am before the green flag is waved at 10.00am.
The Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000 will take place over 161 laps of the iconic 6.213km circuit.
