Richards and Jones to start fourth at Bathurst

A solid Top 10 Shootout lap has put Jason Richards and Andrew Jones on the second row of the grid for tomorrow's Supercheap Auto 1000 at Bathurst.

Richards set the 2m08.0657s lap in the Firepower Commodore as the sixth car on the track in the 'single car against the clock' session after qualifying fourth on Friday.

It's the Kiwi's best-ever qualifying performance at Mount Panorama and he and Jones will start from the outside of the second row of the grid alongside Toll HSV drivers Rick and Todd Kelly.

"It's a really good feeling to nail down a great lap around Bathurst," said Richards.

"We've proved the character of this team to fight back from the accident on Thursday and be on the second row of the grid. It will be a big day tomorrow."

Richards moved to the top of the timesheets upon completing his lap, meaning at the very worst he would remain in the same position as Friday qualifying, which ultimately proved true.

He was fastest across the top of the Mountain, the most challenging section of circuit in Australian motorsport.

Last year's Bathurst runner-up, Richards was greeted with cheers in the Tasman Motorsport garage when he returned from his lap, further boosting confidence before the team tackles the Mountain tomorrow.
