The K-Mart Racing Holden Commodore of Greg Murphy and Rick Kelly topped the timesheet in both practice sessions on day one of the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Mount Panorama in Bathurst today.

In front of a near record day one crowd of 28,140 (record 28,566 -- 2002), Murphy clocked a flying lap of 2:08.3282 just shy of Mark Skaife's practice record set last year of 2:08.1913.

In the first practice session this morning, Kelly took the Commodore VY around the 6.213km circuit in 2:09.5801 to start the 2003 Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 in dominant fashion.

Gold Coast's David Besnard was second quickest today clocking 2:09.2038 in one of his best practice performances with Ford Performance Racing since joining the team this year.

Holden Racing Team's Number 1 Commodore was the third fastest car with a time of 2:09.3301 with Todd Kelly in the seat for this lap.

John Bowe (OzEmail Racing) was fourth fastest with 2:09.7605 ahead of Garth Tander (Garry Rogers Motorsport) who set 2:09.9372.

These five cars all went under 2:10 in today's practice sessions with another 10 cars setting a best lap time of under 2:11.

V8 Supercar Championship Series leader Marcos Ambrose was 14th fastest in the Pirtek Racing BA Falcon clocking 2:10.9383 and will be looking to squeeze a couple more seconds out of the car tomorrow with Russell Ingall to stay at the front of the field.

Paul Radisich (Team Betta Electrical), Steven Richards (Castrol Perkins Racing), Paul Morris (Sirromet Racing), Max Wilson (Shell Helix Racing) and Craig Lowndes (Ford Performance Racing) rounded out the top 10 today.

Murphy said the K-Mart Racing Commodore performed extremely well straight out of the truck for this year's Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 campaign.

"I got a clean lap which is pretty unusual in these sessions and pulled a really quick time," said Murphy.

"We worked on getting the balance from the front and rear brakes and the rear of the car felt a bit floaty but the front was working quite well.

"We planned to do this several weeks ago but we'll have quite a different plan tomorrow. You probably won't see us up the front apart from qualifying."

Besnard put the bad memories of last year's practice sessions behind him with a scintillating lap that had him at the top of the charts momentarily.

"The car feels pretty good compared to the past few races," said Besnard.

"We had been going in a certain direction with the car but it was not working. Now we've gone the other way and it is working which defies logic.

"I think we are starting to get our heads around the thing."

Last year Besnard's Falcon was written out of event after a crash by his co-driver Wayne Gardner, but re-entered the race as the co-driver for Glenn Seton. Coincidentally it was an illness to Owen Kelly, Besnard's co-driver this year, that got him the drive with Seton.

In the first practice session for the Konica V8 Supercar Series today, Warren Luff (Dick Johnson Racing) claimed the fastest lap of 2:13.3054 in his Falcon AU ahead of Owen Kelly in the Metal Corp Recycles Falcon AU (2:13.7382) and Milligans Food Group Racing's Mark Winterbottom who set 2:14.0565.

Jim Richards, in his OAMPS Insurance Brokers Porsche 911 GT3, was the fastest qualifier in the Carrera Cup with a time of 2:16.1277 with Tim Leahey (Braun/Mossimo) second fastest with 2:16.4161, and Peter Fitzgerald (ENJO/SEW Eurodrive) rounding out the top three.

Race one of the Historic Touring Cars was taken out by Steve Mason in his Biante Model Cars Camero Chev who was close to four seconds ahead of Jervis Ward (The Creative Parrot Ford Mustang) with John Bryant (Ford Rally Sprint) claiming third place.

Jamie Cartwright (MG -- X Power MGF Trophy) was quickest in today's practice of the Kumho Tyres MGF Trophy Series with a best lap of 2:54.7930 from Yanis Derums (Maxisteel.Mango Mortgages) who clocked 2:55.0655.

Day two of the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 commences at 8am with the second practice session of the Konica V8 Supercars. The V8 Supercars hit the track for their third practice session at 9.45am with qualifying starting at 12.55pm and concluding at 2.35pm. For further information visit the website
