Both SBR cars in top eight in Perth Besnard jumps series spot.

Both Stone Brothers Racing Fords finished in the top eight in the opening race of the sixth round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth today.

Marcos Ambrose finished a strong seventh in his Pirtek Falcon after starting uncharacteristic 16th and David Besnard was eighth in his Caltex Havoline Ford.

Besnard's efforts moved him from 10th to equal ninth in the championship and he managed his result despite being punted off the track on the final lap while running sixth.

Besnard did a fantastic job to qualify fifth despite being in the "slower" 50% of the field after the morning practice and then maintained his spot in the shootout.

"I was quick early on and we managed to maintain pace for most of the race," said Besnard.

"It was unfortunate to work as hard as we did to have (Russell) Ingall unload us off the track on the final lap.

"Thankfully I managed to keep it going and keep it off the wall at the same time.

"The tyres are still round, but they were not in great shape at the end.

"It is great to jump another spot in the championship and hopefully we can jump another one tomorrow."

Ambrose drove an impressive race after missing the set-up a little in qualifying and starting 16th.

"I guess that was another case of getting out of jail for us," said Ambrose.

"We definitely had a lot better race car than qualifying car.

"I got a bump at the start of the race, but that was basically the only trouble for the race.

"The balance was quite good towards the end of the race and I was pushing on.

"10 laps from home I thought I was no chance to catch the guys in front of me, but we kept working at it.

"We were only four tenths off pole, but the nature of this place meant that we were back in 16th, which is certainly one of my worst qualifying efforts in this category.

"We need to look to tomorrow and make sure we build on the foundation we set today."

Today's race was won by Mark Skaife from Jason Bright, Greg Murphy and Todd Kelly

Tomorrow will include 42-lap race at 10.40am (Perth) and another 42-lapper at 1pm (Perth).

*The races can be seen on Network Ten from 2.30pm EST.
