BARGWANNA, THE BARBAGALLO CHARGER
Larkham -- Orrcon Racing's pint sized pilot Jason Bargwanna was the hard charger during today's opening race to finish ninth at Barbagallo Raceway near Perth.
After qualifying in 25th position earlier in the day Bargwanna was the big mover early in the race to be just outside the top 15 within the opening few laps with his Larkham -- Orrcon Racing team-mate Mark Winterbottom following closely behind.
Continuing his charge Bargwanna was in tenth position at half race distance courtesy of some consistent pace and some slick work by the crew during the compulsory pit stop to change a minimum of two tyres.
As the race continued Bargwanna held his own inside the top ten to cross the line and record his first top ten for the year.
Winterbottom was also putting in a consistent performance to be running in 17th position for the latter half of the race before contact with Simon Wills dropped him down several positions. The 23-year-old crossed the line in 20th position.
Today's opening race was won by Mark Skaife ahead of early race leader Marcos Ambrose and Steven Richards.
Bargwanna will start the first of tomorrow's 58-lap race (10:00am) from ninth position with Winterbottom to start from the tenth row on the grid. The round will be highlighted with the third and final race at 1:40pm.
Network Ten will telecast today's opening race this evening (following the AFL in the Eastern States and the Saturday movie in SA and WA). Tomorrow's telecast begins at 2:30pm.
Jason Bargwanna -- #10 Orrcon Racing Falcon
"It really was a great effort by the guys. The chips have been down lately but everyone has maintained their focus in achieving a result, today I think today we have shown the determination that we have within in the team. After qualifying we made several changes to springs, suspension geometry and shock absorbers which all headed in the right direction. Tonight we have more data to digress and will be making some more changes for tomorrow's races."
Mark Winterbottom -- #20 Orrcon Racing Falcon
"Starting back where I was there was no need for heroics. It was a case of getting to the end and gaining some points and look forward towards tomorrow's two races. We made some changes in the set up after qualifying but will be making a lot more after we assess the data from today's race."
Mark Larkham -- Team Owner -- Larkham -- Orrcon Racing
"After a couple of tough rounds I feel that we have now set a good foundation and we can again commence to build our year. Today's results have given every one in the team a boost and a real sense of achievement."
