Solid run lifts McLean's position in Perth.

Brisbane driver Cameron McLean will start from 21st position in tomorrow's second leg of the VB300 V8 Supercar round after a strong performance in leg one and qualifying at Barbagallo Raceway, near Perth, today.

Driving the V.I.P. Pet Foods Ford Falcon XR8, McLean started race one in 22nd spot, worked his way to 19th and surrendered only two places as he struggled with worn tyres toward the end of the 101 km event.

Earlier, the Paragon Motorsport team was boosted by a solid improvement in qualifying pace, with McLean's best lap of 58.49 seconds just 0.46 sec. off the pole position time of Holden driver and championship leader Mark Skaife.

"I had a steady race today, picked up a few more points, made some progress with the car and put us in a good position for the two races tomorrow. My goal tomorrow is to finish in the top 20," McLean said.

"I'm quite pleased with the car, but tomorrow our new chassis engineer Matt Boniface has suggested we try another little tweak during the warm-up. If it works, fine, if it doesn't we'll go back to the set-up we used today.

"One thing for sure, though, is that we're going to keep to our strategy of early pit stops so that we'll be ready for any situation that occurs if the safety car comes out."

RESULTS - Race 1 (42 laps, 101 km):
1 Mark Skaife (Commodore)
2 Jason Bright (Commodore)
3 Greg Murphy (Commodore)
4 Todd Kelly (Commodore)
5 Craig Lowndes (Falcon)
21 McLean (Falcon)
