VAN GISBERGEN THE FASTEST OF THE FORD DRIVERS IN FOURTH
Fast-rising young Kiwi V8 Supercar star Shane van Gisbergen was the fastest of the Ford drivers with the fourth best lap time after practice day at the second round of the 2010 series at Bahrain's Bahrain International Circuit last night (NZ time).
In only his second start at the Middle Eastern circuit - the SP Tools-backed Stone Brothers Racing-run 20-year-old visited the track in 2008 when racing for Team Kiwi in a Stone Brothers Racing prepared Ford Falcon - van Gisbergen was beaten only by defending series champion Jamie Whincup and his teammate Craig Lowndes in their new Team Vodafone Holdens and the Holden of Jack Daniel's Racing's Todd Kelly.
The four were the only drivers to lap below the 2.06 second mark, the best of the rest Ford Performance Racing's Steve Richards with the fifth quickest time and former series champion Garth Tander with the sixth.
Shane van Gisbergen -- Driver, SP Tools Racing Car #9
"The new bit of road we are racing on is pretty cool. To start with today we just ran through the motions and did some longer runs. The surface of the track is really abrasive so the tyres didn't last that long and our times dropped away a far bit. That's why we ran a new set at the end just so we know what we have tomorrow in qualifying. A lot of guys didn't do that so they might find themselves out of balance when they put on a new set.
"The car setup is good for qualifying but I think we need work on a bit more traction for the race. And just make sure it looks after the tyres over the 200kms tomorrow.
"The pace was still there today which is pretty encouraging."
This weekend's schedule again sees two 200km races, one on Friday night the other Saturday night.
