BARGWANNA SAYS TYRES CRITICAL IN BAHRAIN
Rock Racing's Jason Bargwanna says that tomorrow's crucial qualifying for Race 3 of the V8 Supercars Championship Series at the Bahrain International Circuit will be a true indication of his speed.
Bargwanna set the 19th fastest time today in practice for the Gulf Air Desert 400, using one set of tyres through the entire day's running.
The driver of the #11 Rock Commodore has saved a set of brand-new Dunlop tyres for tomorrow's racing, and on the very abrasive Bahrain layout, he hopes it will play into his hands later in the weekend.
Tony Ricciardello continues to improve aboard the #16 Super-Max Holden Commodore, preparing himself for this weekend's two 37-lap races in practice today.
The West Aussie is happy to enter this weekend's racing with an event now under his belt, allowing him to use information gained in Abu Dhabi last weekend to his advantage here in Bahrain.
Craig Lowndes topped today's combined practice times at the Bahrain International Circuit ahead of Jamie Whincup and Kelly Racing driver Todd Kelly.
KELLY RACING QUOTEBOARD
Jason Bargwanna - #11 Rock Holden Commodore:
"It's a little disappointing to be down the order a bit," said Jason Bargwanna.
"We're certainly not on top of the Rock Commodore just yet.
"We chased what Todd was doing a little bit. We just need to do a bit more work on the set-up to get it a bit more to my liking.
"Tyres are so critical here. We've done the whole practice on one set of tyres so when we go onto new tyres tomorrow that will be an indication of where we are really at."
Tony Ricciardello - #16 Super-Max Holden Commodore:
"I was trying to deal with the tyre wear today because it's going to be a big factor, especially in the races," said Tony Ricciardello.
"The tyres go off after about one lap and it's pretty hard to get a gauge on the car.
"I need to just concentrate on getting a really good race strategy to look after the tyres because it's going to be a long, long 37 laps.
"I think we probably prepared ourselves a little bit better this time around. I've spent more time with the guys and I know the car a lot better now. Knowing what it does helps us get on top of things a bit earlier, so we've made a good step forward.
"Now we are going to look at qualifying to see if we can get the most out of a green set of tyres because after one or two laps it's gone."
