Clarion Sandown 500 -- The Highlight of Most Successful PROCAR Event Yet In 2001

CLARION Sandown 500 organisers PROCAR Australia rated last weekend's event their most successful yet after counting a three-day attendance of 20,450 at Sandown International Motor Raceway in Melbourne.

This was the fourth independent PROCAR Champ Series meeting and the first staged in Victoria.

The highlight of the meeting was the 34th running of the Sandown 500 kilometre race, won by John Bowe and Tom Waring in a Ferrari 360, but also on the bill were championship rounds for PROCAR categories, the Megamantis.com Australian Nations Cup Championship, the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship and the Poolrite V8 BRute Muster.

PROCAR Australia Chairman and Chief Executive Ross Palmer praised the contribution of Sandown host promoter Jon Davison to the meeting's success.

"After agreeing to the Sandown 500 being staged again for production-based cars, Davo provided a superb venue at Sandown," Palmer said.

"This was a fantastic showcase for the racing categories PROCAR has developed. Fans enjoyed a weekend of racing that was as exciting and professional as any in Australia and they enjoyed it in the most comfortable and attractive surroundings."

After appearing also at Goulburn's Wakefield Park, Queensland Raceway at Ipswich and Eastern Creek in Sydney, the PROCAR Champ Series will stage its final 2001 round at Oran Park, near Sydney, on 23-25 November.

The sixth rounds of the Nations Cup and GT Performance Series from Sandown will be shown on Trackside on Network Ten at 3.30 pm next Sunday, 23 September.

A 90-minute special coverage of the Clarion Sandown 500 will air on Network Ten from 2.30 pm on Sunday 30 September.

The Century Batteries GT Production Series and Poolrite V8 BRute Muster Series are scheduled to appear shortly on Fox Sports.
