Longhurst and Wilson maintain momentum in race one.
Today's race was overall a fast paced race with the Team Betta Electrical cars starting on the grid in 9th and 10th place. The pace car was called out in the first lap after Steven Johnson in Car 17 and team mate Paul Radisch in Car 18 came together before the first corner, putting both the Shell Helix cars out of the race. The pace car remained out for a total of 5 laps while the wreckage of Shell Helix Car 18 was removed from the circuit. Both Team Betta Electrical cars driven by Tony Longhurst and Max Wilson maintained their initial positions. Wilson in Car 65 pitted for tyres in lap 8 with Tony Longhurst in Car 66 following for his mandatory pit stop in lap 9.
The race was fast and furious, several positions changing with the lead cars. Wilson was unable to make any headway on the leaders and finally finished the 36 lap race in 14th position. Longhurst in Car 66 was positioned behind Wilson for a good deal of the race. He however, dropped 2 positions at lap 33, finally crossing the line in 14th position.
Longhurst commented after the race that his Car 66 just didn't have the legs on the leading bunch. He is confident with overnight adjustments the car will be more competitive for Races 2 & 3 tomorrow.
Last year I finished this race in 5th position and I'd like to improve on that this year, he commented. Wilson was disappointed in not being able to make any headway on the leading cars but did manage to maintain his position on the circuit in what turned out to be one of the fastest races experienced this year. I like the circuit. It has some good fast corners as well as slow ones and I found the car well balanced to suit the circuit, he said. I feel sure my performance will improve for the remaining 2 races tomorrow. Together Tony and I would like to thank the Team Betta Electrical retailers here in New Zealand for their magnificent support. It has been a pleasure coming over here to participate in this race.
