Whincup second in AGP V8 showdown
TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup has recorded his best ever Australian Grand Prix result finishing today's BRC IMPCO V8 Supercar GP Challenge race at Albert Park second, while teammate Craig Lowndes was eighth.
Whincup, who started today's race fifth, worked his way up to second despite drizzly conditions and fading light threatening to hamper his run on the notoriously hard to pass circuit.
The reigning V8 Supercar Champion said was please to finally get a top three result at Albert Park.
"It's good to get a result here," said Whincup. "This is actually the best I have ever done on this circuit.
"The conditions were quite dicey out there as it was spitting rain throughout the whole race.
"The car was a lot faster today. We made some changes overnight which proved to be the right way to go," he explained.
Teammate Craig Lowndes who started today's race from fourth on the grid finished eighth after a couple of uplanned off track excursions saw him lose track position.
"It wasn't our day today," Lowndes said. "I got a poor start with too much wheel spin then throughout the race I had too much oversteer.
"Mid race I had contact with Frosty (Mark Winterbottom) then I ran wide later in the race and lost another spot.
"The changes we made overnight didn't work as well as we had hoped so we will go back to the drawing board tonight and try and find some middle ground between yesterday's setup and today's," he added.
The final 13-lap race of the weekend will be run at 2.20pm (AEDST) tomorrow
