TeamVodafone duo finish top five in opening AGP race.

TeamVodafone's Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup have both finished within the top five in the opening 13 lap V8 Supercar race at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne tonight.

Lowndes, who enjoyed a race long battle with Shane Van Gisgbergan for third place, eventually settled for fourth while teammate Jamie Whincup finished closely behind in fifth. The teammates were seemingly Inseparable during today's on-track session, finishing the Top Ten Shootout sixth and seventh respectively .

Reasonably happy with the day's results Lowndes said his Commodore's speed was encouraging.

"I did get some wheelspin off the start which cost me slightly and allowed Cheesburger (Shane Van Gisbergen) to get past," Lowndes explained.

"The car balance was good and I actually had better speed than I showed but I just struggled to get round Shane (Van Gisbergen). Then halfway through the race I developed a small engine miss which affected me at Turns 1 and 2.

"All-in-all it was a pretty good day and whilst not for championship points, it gives us a good chance to really test and push these new cars in a race situation," he added.

Teammate Jamie Whincup didn't quite get the qualifying position he was aiming for but he did set a new race lap record of 1:58.2337 on lap four of the race..

"Obviously I paid the price of a poor qualifying and starting further back," Whincup acknowledged. "But on a positive note I had good car speed, in fact we got the lap record early in the race.

"This weekend is good for trying new things and learning how to drive these Commodores faster."

The V8 Supercar action at the Australian Grand Prix continues with race two tomorrow evening and then the third and final race before the Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.
