BOWE'S FALCON TAKEN OUT ON OPENING LAP OF CLIPSAL 500

After a strong run on the opening day of the Clipsal 500, Cat Racing's assault on the streets of Adelaide was cut short after being eliminated on the opening lap of Sunday's race.

After starting from position eight, Bowe made a strong start but was taken out at the hairpin at the end of the main straight.

Ford driver Steven Ellery struck the rear of Garth Tander's Holden, blocking the track.

Bowe had nowhere to go, striking the rear of Ellery. The Ford of Mark Larkham then canoned into the rear of Bowe - eliminating him from the event.

Despite several attempts, Bowe was unable to restart the car and had to be towed to the rear of the pits.

The Cat car suffered severe damage to the front and rear but Bowe was unhurt in the incident.

The opening lap drama resulted in a safety car being sent out while Bowe's car was retrieved.

Bowe was one of several drivers to strike trouble in the early action packed laps including Paul Radisich, Cameron McConville, Rodney Forbes, Paul Morris, Garth Tander and Dean Canto.

"We are all very disappointed, particularly after the strong run we had yesterday," Bowe said.

"I got off the throttle when I saw the drama, but I still had nowhere to go.

"It was probably OK until I got struck up the rear, but the second hit did quite a lot of damage.

"The fuel cell has been pushed right up into the back of the car.

"I tried to re-start the car but it wouldn't fire. The damage was just too extensive - maybe I needed a Cat D9 to push the field out of the way."

The race was scheduled to be the final run for the Caterpillar team's current Ford Falcon V8 Supercar.

The Briggs Motorsport team has a new car nearing completion which is due to be debuted at the next round of the championship at Eastern Creek.

Today's race was won by Holden driver Jason Bright ahead of Russell Ingall and Steven Johnson. <pre> RESULTS - 250km - 78laps 1. - Bright (Holden) - 2:06:34.591 2. - Ingall (Holden) - 2:06:35.841 3. - Johnson (Ford) - 2:06:50.866 4. - Seton (Ford) - 2:06:52.245 5. - Kelly (Holden) - 2:06:53.752 6. - Ambrose (Ford) - 2:06:57.913 7. - Richards (Ford) - 2:07:02.062 8. - Perkins (Holden ) - 2:07:17.510 9. - Skaife (Holden) - 2:07:27.016 10. - Murphy (Holden) - 2:07:27.808 DNF BOWE (CAT FORD) - 0 laps
