Strong Top Ten Finish For Bowe In Opening Leg Of Clipsal 500
Cat Racing's John Bowe performed strongly to finish 8th in the opening 250km leg of the Clipsal 500 on the streets of Adelaide today.
Bowe kept out of trouble in the early laps, dodging a number of altercations including a clash between Garth Tander, Todd Kelly and Steven Johnson.
As the first round of pit stops began to occur, Bowe's Falcon was able lead the event briefly before having to pit for his compulsory fuel stop on lap 32.
Rejoining in 12th spot, he continued his consistent run, rising again to 5th before making his tyre stop on lap 48.
He rejoined in 14th spot, and again drove strongly to rise to 8th position at the chequered flag.
The opening leg was won by Ford newcomer, Craig Lowndes ahead of Steven Johnson and Russell Ingall.
"The car ran really well and I am very pleased that we were able to get the car home with a strong finish," Bowe said.
"There are double points on offer tomorrow, so that is the day that really counts.
"Like everyone, we had our share of troubles, but still managed to get to the finish."
A number of leading contenders failed to finish after on-track altercations including Glen Seton, Paul Radisich and Greg Murphy.
Bowe suffered bent steering just prior to his second pit stop after being struck by Russell Ingall and was later turned around by Jason Bargwanna on lap 70.
Bargwanna received a stop-go penalty for the incident. Despite the bent steering, Bowe still recorded the second fastest lap of the event.
"The car was hard on its tyres with the steering bent, but we just had to press on," Bowe said.
"This race is very hard on cars and drivers, but physically, I feel pretty good.
"The weather wasn't as hot as we expected, but it was still pretty tough inside the car. I am really looking forward to tomorrow as we should be in pretty good shape.
"The team has done well so far, but anything can happen tomorrow. We just have to press on and see what happens."
