Whincup wins season opener
TeamVodafone's love affair with Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit continued at the opening round of the 2011 V8 Supercar Championship Series last night.
While it was Craig Lowndes on pole position for the first 200km race, the race win went to his teammate Jamie Whincup who remains unbeaten on the 4.7 km track.
The victory comes as Whincup celebrates his 100th event and is his twelfth consecutive off shore win.
It was an all TeamVodafone front row for the race start but both Lowndes and Whincup bogged down. Whincup got away in second while Lowndes stalled, dropping back to fifth.
Abu Dhabi's defending Champion took control of the race on the opening lap and was never headed as he romped to victory 13 seconds ahead of Alex Davison.
The Race 1 winner, who also walked away with the fastest lap time, said it was the first ever race win for his new mechanic, Chris Goose and the perfect start to the season.
It was an unlucky race for Lowndes whose poor start left him unable to capitalize on his first pole position in two years. The Bathurst Champion struggled with severe oversteer throughout the race and dropped back to seventh by the race end.
Lowndes acknowledged he over loaded the clutch off the start and said it was a terrible result considering he started on pole.
TeamVodafone will make changes to car 888 ahead of tonights final leg of the Yas V8 400.
