Abu Dhabi: TeamVodafone preview

TeamVodafone quietly confident heading into Abu Dhabi

As Round One of the 2011 V8 Supercar Championship Series in Abu Dhabi draws near, TeamVodafone is feeling confident, heading back to the track where they started their domination last season.

This being the second year Abu Dhabi has hosted a V8 championship round, it is also the second year TeamVodafone hits the tracks in their Holden Commodore VEII V8 Supercars, Abu Dhabi being the location of their debut round and also their history making 1-2 win in a Holden.

The whole team is feeling quietly confident, buoyed by last year's results and also last week's Eastern Creek Test Day, where Craig Lowndes was quickest on the day, setting a new lap record.

Champion of the inaugural Abu Dhabi event, winning both races last year; Jamie Whincup is looking forward to the getting into his old TeamVodafone Commodore but with a new twist.

"It's a big change," Whincup said. "This year we are running on the soft compound tyres, so it's going to be a massive challenge.

"If we can get the car nice and quick on the soft tyre, we should have a pretty good run."

Prior to the Abu Dhabi round last year, TeamVodafone was in the midst of switching marques but this year sees the championship winning team take to the track with 13 Commodore race victories under their belt.

Fresh from a very successful pre-season test, Craig Lowndes is keen to keep the momentum going.

"Twelve months on from when we were there last year, we are a lot more knowledgeable. The circuits fantastic, it's fast flowing and wide, so we are really looking for big things."

The V8 Supercars will take to the 4.7km Yas Marina track on Thursday February 10 for practice. Qualifying and Race 1 of the Championship will be held on Friday with Race 2 to conclude the event on Saturday.

TeamVodafone will be conducting a live blog from the pit garage during both races with coverage to kick off at 12.35am (AEST) each day.
