Positive debut for TeamVodafone Commodores in Abu Dhabi practice
TeamVodafone's brand new Holden Commodore VE V8 Supercars have made an impressive on track debut at the inaugural Yas V8 400 at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit today.
Jamie Whincup was the fastest man on track, topping the timesheets in both practice sessions. The reigning V8 Supercar Champion was however handed a post race penalty for crossing the white line at Turn 9 which saw him stripped of his fastest practice time.
Acknowledging his mistake, Whincup said he was extremely pleased with the progress the team made with the #1 Commodore.
"The rules are the rules and I will make sure I don't make the same mistake in qualifying," Whincup said.
"I must admit I am slightly surprised with where we are considering our test but the engineers have spent the past couple days going over data and the car responded very well to everything we did today.
"This track is going to offer great racing. It is awesome to drive around especially when the sun goes down," Whincup added.
Car 888 pilot, Craig Lowndes, was also on the pace, posting the second quickest times in both sessions.
After an extremely hectic off season and lead-up to the season opening V8 Supercar event Lowndes praised his team for delivering two extremely competitive cars.
"This is a great way to start the new season with brand new cars," Lowndes said. "We are getting more and more out of them each time we go out.
"It is nice to be back in a Holden again. The car is responding well and I feel extremely comfortable in it.
"This track is what I thought it would be, it's flowing, it's fast and it has hard braking corners. A good lap time comes from being able to use the kerbs," he explained
Tomorrows on track action will see qualifying for the first ever V8 Supercar Race at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit start at 8.10pm (AEST) with Race 1 (200km) to get underway at 12.05am (AEST).
