ALEX DAVISON TAKES TOP-10 IN OPENING RACE IN ABU DHABI
IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison has started the V8 Supercar Championship season on a positive note with a ninth place finish at the opening race of the Yas V8 400 under lights in Abu Dhabi.
Davison enjoyed his best qualifying performance, making the top-10 shootout for the first time in his V8 Supercar career.
The IRWIN Ford started from eighth and was sixth at the end of the opening lap. During the early stages of the race Davison was able to stick with the cars in front and pitted from fourth position on the 13th lap for fuel and tyres.
Returning to the track in 11th, Davison once again put his head down and battled with fellow Ford racer Mark Winterbottom during the middle stages of the race.
The IRWIN Falcon made its second and final stop on lap #28 from fourth position, but the final fifteen laps were a struggle. The shift-cut on the gearbox stopped working, forcing Davison to lift off the accelerator when changing-up on the long straights. Int the end the IRWIN Ford driver held-off a fast finishing Rick Kelly to claim ninth place.
Tomorrow Davison and the IRWIN Racing team take to the track once again for qualifying and the final 200km (43-lap ) race around the spectacular Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
What IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison had to say:
"It was great making our first shootout in the IRWIN Ford and I certainly gained a lot from that experience. The race was solid, but we certainly aimed for an even better result after our performance throughout practice and qualifying. The major issue was when the shift-cut stopped working. That was costing us around half-a-second per lap, plus we couldn't race with those around us. Importantly it's an issue than can be fixed and with some other minor improvements to the IRWIN Ford, I'm sure a result inside the top-six can be achieved."
What David Stuart - IRWIN Race Engineer had to say:
"It really was a solid day for the entire IRWIN Racing team. Making the shootout is a major step for Alex and I'm sure that there will be more to come. We felt that we should have been around the top-six in the race, but considering the issues we had, ninth place is very satisfying. Fixing the shift-cut only requires replacing a small electronic part and we have already confirmed that was the issue. In terms of the tyres we have remaining, the IRWIN Racing team is very well placed. That along with some chassis improvements and we will be right up there."
