DAVISON ON THE PACE IN ABU DHABI
IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison has topped two of today's four practice sessions at the Yas V8 400 in Abu Dhabi.
Davison went on to be sixth fasted in the third session before ending strongly with the fourth quickest time overall for the day.
A further positive sign for the IRWIN Racing team was that Stone Brothers Racing Team-mate Shane van Gisbergen set the fastest time for the day.
Davison drove all but the final segment of the fourth practice session on the same set of tyres. Importantly the IRWIN Racing Ford remained strong throughout as the team made minor changes to further improve the balance of the car.
At the end of the day Davison put on a fresh set of tyres and took to the track. If not for a locked wheel, where he lost 0.3 of a second, the IRWIN Falcon could have very well topped the time sheets.
Tomorrow Davison and the IRWIN Racing team return to the AUS$1.5 billion Yas Marina Circuit for qualifying, top-10 shootout and the opening 200km (43 lap) race.
Alex Davison - IRWIN Racing
"This has been our best day in practice since I joined the IRWIN Racing team. It's the first time both our car and that of our team mate Shane van Gisbergen have been solidly in the top-four. We had a good run in the first two sessions setting the fastest times. We then did the majority of the final two sessions on worn tyres. The pleasing thing was that we remained near the top of the time sheets despite the older tyres. The team improved the IRWIN Ford as we went along and at the very end we put the fresher tyres on and it felt pretty good. I didn't get the best lap, as I made a small mistake, so we could have even been the fastest for the session. The great thing is we know the time is there and we will make a couple of further improvements going into qualifying."
David Stuart - IRWIN Racing Engineer
"It's a good boost to everyone on the IRWIN Racing Falcon. We will now have a good look at the data and make sure we have it even better tomorrow and aim for a top-five in qualifying. We tried to keep the car constant and we chipped away at it. The team made some improvements and it certainly made the IRWIN Ford even better. The team used all four sessions to full advantage and that puts us in a good position for tomorrow's qualifying and opening 200km race.
