V8 UTES JOIN TOP TIER
One of New Zealands most exciting motor racing classes, V8 Utes, will step up to bring their exciting "no holds barred" brand of action to the Tier One motor racing programme starting this season.
The V8 Ute Series has been a popular addition to the New Zealand motorsport scene since its debut three seasons ago and its quick rise to the top echelon of New Zealand motorsport underlines that popularity. The current Tier One categories include premier classes such as the NZV8 Sedans, the Toyota Racing Series and the Porsche GT3 Cup and V8 Utes will join this premium line up of motor racing action.
The original V8 Ute concept in New Zealand arose when a one-off Trans-Tasman event was instigated at Manfeild in February 2006 by the current Chairman of NZ V8 Ute Racing Ash Cairns. The event was organised by the then newly formed Manfeild Park Trust and attracted the biggest crowd to the circuit for many years.
After that event a small initial group of investor shareholders provided seed capital to form a company modelled on the successful V8 Ute Racing series in Australia. Sixteen brand new, race modified, BF Ford XR8 and VE Holden SS Utes were ordered. All were quickly sold and numbers were supplemented by older, pre-raced Australian Utes. The category is a controlled class with matched engine maps and identical tyres, brakes and suspension so as to ensure opportunities are equal and costs are contained.
Now at the end of the third series as a standalone event and hot on the heels of the outstanding popularity of the Utes at the Hamilton 400 last April - the Board of the V8 Ute Company are pleased to be invited to compete in the "Main Game". .
The Chairman of V8 Ute Racing, Ash Cairns, is thrilled with the news. "This will increase the profile of the series and provide an opportunity for the slightly more social racer to have a go in the "Main Game" driving a current model Aussie V8 -without perhaps the level of cost and intensity of the more serious NZV8 Sedan Series.
Cairns believes the V8 Ute Racing Series will be complimentary to the mainstream NZV8 Sedan Series and will provide a feeder for young guys moving up and a retirement home for old blokes moving down.
Lindsay Dodd, the Series Co-Ordinator/Manager says, "I'm really excited about the whole series. It will be a massive series. We will put an absolutely new spectacle in front of the public both on and off the track. ENZED will be the primary sponsor of the category which will be known as ENZED V8 Utes. Radio Hauraki, Yokohama and Castrol will also provide substantial support to make this one of the better supported series in the country. A further family of sponsors is currently being negotiated."
Television coverage would be a part of the Tier One package with same day coverage of the ENZED V8 Utes.
The V8 Utes Series currently enjoys support from corporate partners, ENZED, Radio Hauraki, Yokohama and Castrol.
