MCNALLY FIGHTS ON THE STREETS IN V8 UTES
Rhys McNally has finished 12th in the opening race of the V8 Utes around the streets of Townsville after a spirited drive which saw him back in the pack on the opening lap.
After an awesome start Rhys stayed on the outside of the notorious turn two corner and managed to pick up a number of places in the anticipated traffic jam.
"I got off the line well and decided to stay well away from what I expected to be a tight situation; it paid off for me and I gained places," Rhys said.
Unfortunately all the good work was lost at the first chicane when Rhys ran wide and dropped back to 16th place in the order.
It was then that he showed true performance in the way he drove to come back to 12th place by the end of the race, exchanging places with the well credentialed Gary Baxter, only to be beaten by him after running wide at the end of the race.
"It was valuable racing laps out there,
"To be fighting with Gary (Baxter) it really gave me some great experience in a true copmbat situation with one of the best in the business.
"I only just missed out on beating him," he said.
Qualifying earlier saw Rhys in 14th place on the grid in what was described as "not where I wanted to be" by Rhys.
"We really need to nail it in qualifying to give myself a better chance in the races," he said.
Rhys will start off position 1 in tomorrow's race 2, a fitting 20th birthday present for the west Australian.
"It would be awesome to win on my birthday,
"It will not be easy out there, I just need to get off the line well and put my head down for the entire race."
Rhys has race 2 and race 3 tomorrow.
