McKenna Claims Second Victory at New Jersey Motorsports Park
MILLVILLE, NJ (June 29, 2010) -- Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Patrick McKenna scored his second victory of the season in Round 6 of the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda races on the Thunderbolt Raceway courses at New Jersey Motorsports Park this past weekend.
In addition to the win, McKenna also picked up another podium finish when he crossed the line in second place the day earlier in Round 5.
After qualifying the No. 2 machine second Saturday morning, McKenna was unable to catch the pole-sitter Sage Karam, who drives for Andretti Autosport in race one. But it was a different story on Sunday, as McKenna was able to capitalize on an early-race mistake by Karam.
Karam led the first four laps but got off course and punctured a hole in the radiator of his car. McKenna, who started the race third and moved up one spot, was then able to hold off JDC MotorSports Mikhail Goikhberg for his second victory of the season.
"I'm really happy with how the weekend turned out," McKenna said. "The team did a great job in tuning the car, and the track conditions were good over the course of the weekend. We didn't quite have the pace to challenge Sage in the first race, but in race two we were a lot more competitive. Though you never like to see a competitor in the pits early, with Sage not finishing (race two) it was a big boost to our championship point standings."
McKenna was able to gain ground on Karem in the driver championship standings and only trails by 11 points (160 to 149). The Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team is third in team standings only eight markers back to second-place team JDC Motorsports (136-128).
Next up for McKenna and Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing are Rounds 7 & 8 at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Illinois July 31st and August 1st.
