McKenna, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing Finishes Sixth at Iowa Speedway
NEWTON, Iowa (June 22, 2010) -- No. 2 Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Patrick McKenna finished sixth in Round 4 of the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda at Iowa Speedway.
After starting on the front row for the race, McKenna and the No. 7 Andretti Autosport machine driven by Zach Veach made contact on Turns 1 and 2 on the opening lap. Though McKenna was able to continue and maintain his position, the incident punctured his left-rear tire causing a slow leak.
McKenna was overtaken at the halfway point by the No. 11 of Raphael Abbate, but held his own in the third position and it seemed he was going to be able to hold on for the podium finish. Unfortunately, on Lap 47 of 50, the slow-leaking tire forced him to pit and ended his streak of podium finishes. He finished sixth.
"It was unfortunate what happened at the beginning of the race," McKenna said. "Zach (Veach) slid up as I was edging down to the low line, and we touched. The car felt OK initially, but I soon realized I had a problem as it got really loose after a few laps. It got worse as the race developed, and unfortunately it blew out with two to go. Luckily, however, I managed to keep it off the wall.
"I really enjoyed my oval experiences, but I'm looking forward to New Jersey next weekend."
There is no rest for the weary, as Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing heads straight to New Jersey Motorsports Park for Rounds 5 & 6 at New Jersey Motorsports Park June 26th and 27th. Both races can be seen live on HDNet in addition to live timing and scoring on USF2000.com. Tickets can be purchased by going to www.njmp.com.
