Yeley Emerges As Usac Sprint Car Champion Kaeding (2) Carpenter Top Terre Haute, Salem Sprint Finales

J.J. Yeley emerged as the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Champion for 2001 following a weekend in which his primary challenger, Jay Drake, was sidelined with injuries, ironically not suffered in sprint car competition.

Drake, of Val Verde, Calif., who led the series standings prior to races Saturday at Terre Haute, Ind. and Sunday at Salem, Ind., suffered a "closed head injury," a broken arm and broken collarbone in an accident during a USAC Dirt-Track Regional Midget Car heat race at Terre Haute Saturday night. He is listed in "serious but stable" condition at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital neuro-critical-care unit.

Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. captured both 30-lap feature events at Terre Haute and Ed Carpenter of Indianapolis, Ind., won Sunday's "USAC Sprint Legends Classic" at the Salem (Ind.) Speedway. Yeley finished the season with finishes of sixth and 17th at Terre Haute, and 12th at Salem. His final margin in points over runner-up Drake was 19.

Kaeding passed Derek Davidson on the 27th lap and led to the finish to win the "Jan Opperman Classic" which opened Saturday's Terre Haute action. Davidson finished second ahead of Tony Elliott, Drake and Jon Stanbrough. In the nightcap, Kaeding passed Bill Rose on the ninth lap of the "Fall Harvest Classic" and led the rest of the way in his Kohler Faucets/Ferguson Enterprises/Loan City.com Shaver/Maxim. Davidson again finished second, ahead of Dickie Gaines, Levi Jones and Tracy Hines.

Carpenter recorded his initial USAC Sprint car feature victory in Sunday's 30-lapper at Salem, passing Davidson on lap 20 and leading the rest of the way in his Menards/Erikson/Delphi/SAI Wesmar/Beast. Hines finished second ahead of Kaeding, Eric Gordon and Dave Steele. Turbines, Inc. fast qualifiers during weekend action were Levi Jones at Terre Haute and Tracy Hines at Salem.
