Garrett Hansen of Manhattan Beach, Calif. recorded an improbable feature victory in Saturday night's 30-lap USAC Western Midget Car feature race at the Ventura (Calif.) Raceway. He trailed Wally Pankratz for 29 laps, then emerged from turn four as the leader on the final lap when Pankratz' car slowed.
Trailing the Hansen's Welding/Fontana Automotive Stealth/Fontana at the checkered flag were Danny Stratton, Pankratz, Steve Paden and Thomas Meseraull. The victory solidified Hansen's fourth-place series ranking going into this week's USAC National/Western Midget races at Lincoln, Neb. and Belleville, Kans.
The "Mid-Summer Midget Classic" at Eagle Raceway in Lincoln Tuesday night includes a 40-lap main event. Tracy Hines won last year's Lincoln feature. The Belleville (Kans.) High Banks welcome the USAC Midgets back for the 27th running of the Bud Racing "Belleville Midget Nationals" on Friday and Saturday nights. The USAC Ford Focuses competed on Belleville's 1/4-mile dirt oval Thursday night, with the Midgets taking to the 1/2-mile Friday and Saturday. Friday night's feature is 25 laps and Saturday's finale is a 40-lapper. Josh Wise is the defending champion of the Belleville Midget Nationals.
Johnny Rodriguez leads the Western Midget car contingent to Lincoln and Belleville. He has a sizeable lead over Pankratz in the new series standings after finishing seventh at Ventura.
