6 drivers continue torrid Western Sprint point race at Tucson.

A half dozen drivers hope to leave Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park with the USAC Western Sprint Car point lead Saturday night. Only one will, but with 72 points available and only 62 separating the six, competition will be the keyword.

A 40-lap feature is scheduled on the 1/3-mile paved oval, following prelims, which start with practice at 4 pm.

Teammates Chad Nichols of San Carlos, Calif. and Tim Barber of San Francisco, Calif. rank 1-2 in the latest standings, only 17 points apart, while defending series champion Tony Hunt is third, only 25 back of the leader. Former series champion Todd Ellison, former USAC Western Midget and TQ Midget Champion Rick Hendrix and Scott Hansen are the others within striking distance.

"Top-10" finishes in all eight races so far have propelled Nichols and Barber to their 1-2 ranking, although both are still seeking their initial feature wins. Third-ranking Hunt has triumphed twice this year and has seven "top-10s" in eight starts.
