Tanner Swanson Atop USAC Standings
The conclusion of the second race of the season finds Kingsburg's Tanner Swanson atop the USAC Western Sprints leader board. Tanner's TK Motorsports team traveled to Altamont Raceway Park near Tracy, CA this past weekend to dominate the half mile track in their #17 Reich Construction/Eagle/Chevy. His third place finish put the teenage driver in first place with a slim two point lead over Nick Rescino, Jr.
Tanner started off the afternoon becoming the fastest qualifier over second fast qualifier Nick Rescino, Jr. Blowing gusty winds kept qualifying times down but Swanson managed to do the best at running fast despite them. While the high winds were a hamper to the racing, it was a man made problem that cancelled the heat races. The #4 car of four time Western Sprints Champion Tony Hunt developed an oil leak while warming up on the track for the start of the second heat. He laid down an oil streak around the entire track making it necessary to cancel the heats and clean the entire track.
For the 50 lap feature event the top eight qualifiers were inverted meaning that Tanner's #17 car stated on the outside of the fourth row in eighth place. After a couple of early yellow flags for cars that spun Tanner found himself still in the eighth place. Then, with the early caution flags behind them, the race ran under green the rest of the way. Picking off cars one at a time, the 2007 USAC Ford Focus Carolina Series Champion moved up to third place but ran out of laps before he could gain more positions.
Tanner will take his slim championship lead in the USAC Western States Sprints to Salt Lake City, UT. this coming Saturday. He will be at Rocky Mountain Raceways for a 40 lap race to try to add to his points lead at the 3/8 mile banked track.
