SHASTA FEATURES 5 WITHIN 10 OF POINT LEAD
No less than five drivers will square off for the Valvoline USAC Western Sprint Car point lead this Saturday night when the series visits Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif.
This will be the third USAC Western Sprint race at the 1/3-mile paved oval and fourth-ranking defending series champion Tony Hunt is the only active driver to have competed in both the 1999 race and last year's feature. Tony finished fourth in 1999 and 15th in last year's main event.
Series point leader Brad Bumgarner was third in last year's race at Shasta, while fifth-ranking Tim Barber won the 40-lap contest. Second and third-ranking Michael Lewis and Kody Swanson will be making their Shasta Sprint debuts.
Bud Kaeding established the 1-lap track qualifying record of 13.505 seconds in 1999.
Bumgarner's lead stands at just one point over Lewis and Swanson, with Hunt five back and Barber nine in arrears.
Barber and Lewis won this year's series openers at Boise, Idaho April 15-16, while Bumgarner and Swanson had a second and third and Hunt had a pair of fourths.
