Defending USAC National Sprint Car Champion Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. won Friday's 30-mile "shootout" with new World Sprint Car track record holder Jay Drake at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo. The win left Tracy 93 points back of series point leader J.J. Yeley going into this weekend's races at Toledo, Ohio (Friday) and Indianapolis, Ind. (Saturday).

Hemelgarn Racing presents Friday night's annual USAC Sprint Car outing at the Toledo (Ohio) Speedway, while Indianapolis Raceway Park hosts Saturday night's Sprint program. A 30-lap feature event is slated at each venue. Practice at both tracks is scheduled for 5 pm, with qualifying at 6 and racing at 7.

Drake won the PPIR pole at a record speed of 144.950 mph, which eclipsed the 144.590 mph mark set by World of Outlaws driver Billy Pauch at the New York State Fairgrounds mile dirt track in 1994. At the start of Friday's race he yielded to series point leader J.J. Yeley, who paced the first 12 circuits. Hines then led for nine laps before Drake went to the front in his Vital Express/Stanton Race Engines Eagle/Mopar. Hines finally caught Drake on the white-flag lap and held on for the victory over Drake, Dave Steele, A.J. Fike and Eric Gordon.

Yeley's car developed an oil leak and failed to finish the race, relegating him to 22nd position in the official finish.

Brian Tyler, winner of Friday's 10-mile "qualifying race," finished 12th in Friday's 30-miler. He won at Toledo two years ago, finished second to Steele last year and figures to be among top favorites at the Toledo oval Friday.

Hines and Steele will continue their pursuit of Mike Bliss' USAC victory record at IRP this Saturday. Bliss owns 12 career USAC wins at the .686-mile paved oval, while Hines has 10 and Steele nine. From 1997-2001, Hines and Steele combined for an incredible 12 consecutive USAC Sprint Car feature wins at IRP! <pre> USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SERIES STANDINGS 1. J.J. Yeley 912 2. Tracy Hines 819 3.
