Lewis posts late victory in Irwindale Sprint finale

Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind. put the cap on his 2003 USAC Western Sprint Car Championship with a sensational victory in Thursday night's series finale at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway.

Lewis trailed Aaron Pierce for 38 laps, then made his winning move in his Team ASE/Snap-On Eagle/Wesmar on the white-flag lap and led to the checkered flag to beat Pierce, of Muncie, Ind. A.J. Fike, Tom Hessert and Jason Leffler rounded out the "top-five" at the finish.

Lewis' victory was his sixth of the campaign and left him with a huge 180-point title margin over runner-up Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. Lewis also snared the $5,000 cash bonus posted by Earl's Plumbing for the Western Sprint Car qualifying championship, finishing one point ahead of Hunt after posting the second fastest qualifying time!

Tyler Walker was Thursday night's fastest Sprint car qualifier in the event which was part of Irwindale's Mopar "Turkey Night Grand Prix" activities. Chad Nichols won a 12-lap "qualifying race."
