Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. extended his lead in the USAC Western Sprint Car Series with his victory in Saturday afternoon's "Old Pueblo Classic" 40-lapper at Tucson (AZ) Raceway Park. He takes a 28-point lead over Jeff Gardner into this Thursday night's "Turkey Night Grand Prix" events at Irwindale (CA) Speedway and Saturday's USAC finale at the Las Vegas (NV) Motor Speedway "Bullring."
Hunt trailed Bud Kaeding for the first 30 laps and moved in front on a restart. He led the final 10 laps in his Justice Brothers/Torco Oil/Simpson/Eibach Shaver/Beast to beat Kaeding, Bryan Bullard, Gardner and Shauna Hogg. Hunt was also the fastest qualifier but finished second to Kaeding in his heat race.
Indy Racing League veteran Casey Mears of Bakersfield, Calif. made an impressive USAC Sprint Car debut, posting the second fastest qualifying time and winning his heat race. He ran among the leaders early in the feature but slipped to 11th at the checkered flag.
A 40-lap feature event is on tap for the Sprint Cars at Irwindale Thursday, sharing the billing again with the USAC WorldCom National/Western Midget Car Series. The Sprint Cars and Midget Cars are again set for a "doubleheader" in Saturday's season finale at Las Vegas, with a 50-lap main event on tap for the Sprinters. Practice at Irwindale begins at 3 pm and racing starts at 7, while practice at Las Vegas gets under way at 2:30 and racing starts at 5:30.
