Western sprints head for Twin Falls & Salt Lake City

USAC Western Sprint Car point leader Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind. extended his lead with Friday night's 40-lap feature victory at Meridian Speedway in Boise, Idaho, while former series champion Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. captured Saturday night's 50-lapper at the same oval.

The USAC Western and USAC/SLVRA Port-O-Call Rocky Mountain Sprint Car Series continue their four-race "swing" with events this Tuesday night (July 22) at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho and Thursday night (July 24) at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both programs are capped by 40-lap feature events.

Lewis caught Canadian Trevor Montgomery on the 32nd lap of Friday night's race and led the final nine laps in his Team ASE/Snap-On Eagle/Wesmar to beat Montgomery, Jeff Gardner, Rick Hendrix and Brian McClish.

Hunt led wire-to-wire to take Saturday night's 50-lapper in his Western Speed & Fuel/Torco Eagle/Chevy. Kenny Hamilton finished second, ahead of Montgomery, Gardner and Lewis.

The Lewis finishes left him with a 64-point lead over Gardner entering this Tuesday's race at Twin Falls, Idaho.

Dave Fitzgerald of Salt Lake City finished 10th in Saturday night's race but holds only a two-point lead over Jim Waters in the new Port-O-Call Rocky Mountain Sprint Car standings. Waters posted a 20th and a ninth in the two races.
