The USAC Western Midget Car Series is preparing for this Saturday night's "Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic" at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway after rain forced a postponement of last Saturday night's USAC "tripleheader" racing program at the Bullring at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway. Track and USAC officials are hopeful of rescheduling the Las Vegas races later in the 2004 racing season.

The Madera program features a 33-car starting field, starting three-abreast in a 100-lap feature on the 1/3-mile paved oval! J.J. Yeley won last year's Madera 100-lapper.

Steve Paden, currently ninth in the USAC Western Midget Car standings, is the defending series titlist and hopes to im;prove on his ninth-place finish in last year's Madera feature. In two Madera starts last year he finished ninth and eighth.

Another driver to keep an eye on at Madera will be Thomas Meseraull of San Jose, Calif. Meseraull surprised many with his spirited victory in the second "Mopar Twin 25" at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway March 27.

Saturday night's Madera program also includes the California Ford Focus Midget Cars, which will compete in a 25-lap main event.
