Walt Johnson Claims 2001 TQ Midget Car Title
Josh Wise of Riverside, Calif. and Greg Edenholm of Agoura, Calif. recorded USAC feature victories in Saturday night's WorldCom "doubleheader" at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway. Walt Johnson of Sun Valley, Calif. earned his initial USAC driving championship with a sixth-place finish in the WorldCom TQ Midget Car Series finale.
Wise, the fastest qualifier, passed Ronnie Day on the 23rd lap and led the final eight laps to win the 30-lap Midget car race in his Centex Homes/Pipeline Plumbing Esslinger. The race had four leaders, Bryan Stanfill leading the first 15 laps and Thomas Meseraull the next six before Meseraull's flip on lap 22 put Day in front. Meseraull was uninjured. Stanfill finished second ahead of Day, Danny Ebberts and Wally Pankratz.
Ebberts emerged from the race with a 42-point lead over Alex Harris, sixth at Bakersfield, in the new series standings going into races November 17 at Tucson, Ariz., November 22 at Irwindale, Calif. and November 24 at Las Vegas, Nev.
Edenholm led all 20 laps to win Saturday night's WorldCom TQ Midget finale, beating Josh Lakatos, West Evans, Steve Lambert and fast qualifier Todd Hunsaker.
Bobby Boone and Steve Paden (Midgets) and Lakatos (TQs) also flipped at Bakersfield but escaped injury.
Walt Johnson finished the TQ Midget car campaign with a 96-point cushion over runner-up Lambert on the strength of "top-six" finishes in all seven of his starts, including five second-places.
