Robby Flock of Murrieta, Calif. earned his 49th career victory in USAC's Western Midget Car Series Saturday night at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway and he did it in spectacular style!
Flock passed Wally Pankratz on the 20th lap around the 1/2-mile dirt track and appeared headed for victory until Cory Kruseman ran him down on lap 27. On the final lap, however, Kruseman's car sputtered as if out of fuel, allowing Flock to regain the lead and the victory in his Weldway/Paul Oil Eagle/Riolo Chevy.
Kruseman finished second ahead of Rick Hendrix, Pankratz and series leader Johnny Rodriguez, who takes a 79-point series lead into this week's "Rocky Mountain Classic" at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.
Jerome Rodela, Saturday's fastest qualifier at Perris, finished sixth and ranks second in the standings, 37 ahead of Pankratz.
Saturday's "Rocky Mountain Classic" timetable at PPIR has practice starting at 9 am and qualifying beginning at 1 pm. A Midget and Sprint car "qualifying race" are also slated Saturday. Sunday's schedule has warm-ups beginning at 2 pm and the Silver Crown "qualifying race" at 3. The 30-mile Midget feature starts at 4:45, followed by the 30-mile Sprint car feature and the 100-mile Weld Racing Silver Crown race. Midway concerts and a spectacular 9:15 pm fireworks display conclude the weekend activity.
