FAAS LEADS MIDGETS TO VEGAS' BULLRING

Nic Faas of Huntington Beach, Calif. leads the USAC Western Midgets to Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring in Nevada Saturday night for the first USAC Midget race on the 3/8-mile pavement in four years. The last Midget race was won by Rory Price in 2004.

Faas enjoys a 143-point lead over Scott Pierovich in the latest standings, with 74 points available at Las Vegas. He virtually has a lock on the 2008 title and a good finish Saturday would send him to the series finale Nov. 27 at Irwindale, Calif. with an insurmountable lead.

Faas has scored four victories this season, all on dirt. His best pavement finishes have been a second, third and fourth at Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, Calif.

The track now known as the Bullring has hosted 19 USAC races since 1985 in various racing series. The USAC Ford Focus Midgets raced there as recently as May and July.

Saturday's race will be the 81st for USAC in the Silver State and the 42nd in Las Vegas. USAC's first Las Vegas race came in 1959 when Fred Lorenzen won a 147-mile Stock Car race at Las Vegas Park, the 1-mile dirt oval which stood on the site now occupied by the Las Vegas Hilton.
