Hines wins at Tucson, eyes Thursday "Turkey" at Irwindale.
USAC Sprint/Midget season concludes Saturday in Las Vegas.

Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. was the winner of Saturday night's 40-lap "Old Pueblo Classic" at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park and now sets his sights on the final USAC National/Western Midget Car races of the 2002 season. The 62nd Lucas Oil "Turkey Night Grand Prix" unfolds at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway Thursday night, while the 'Bullring" at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway hosts Saturday night's finale.

Hines caught leader Tony Ave in turn one on the 33rd lap and led the final eight laps in his Wilke-Pak Oxi-Clean/Iron Out Sesco/Beast to record his second Midget car victory of the year. Brothers Aaron and A.J. Fike finished second and third respectively, while Ave and Danny Ebberts rounded out the "top-five" at the finish. Ave was the night's "Road to Indy" fastest qualifier and inherited the lead on lap four after a four-car tangle in turn two eliminated cars running in the top-four positions, including Bobby East, who flipped but escaped injury. Dane Carter led the first three laps at Tucson but was one of the four drivers involved in the lap-four accident.

Defending National series champion and point leader Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. finished 10th and maintains an 83-point lead over J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz., who was ninth at Tucson. Danny Stratton of Fontana, Calif. assumed the Western Midget Car point lead after finishing seventh at Tucson, while 3-time champion Robby Flock slipped to second in the standings after failing to earn a feature starting spot.

A total of 138 points are available at Irwindale and Las Vegas and Stratton's lead over Flock is only 10.

Practice at Irwindale Thursday gets under way at 3 pm, followed by qualifying at 4:30 and an autograph session at 5. Racing starts at 7 and includes the USAC Western Sprint Car Series (40-lap feature) and the USAC Ford Focus Midget Car Series (20-lap feature). The 62nd Lucas Oil "Turkey Night Grand Prix" Midget program includes a pair of 12-lap "qualifying races" and the big 100-lap feature event. Saturday's timetable at Las Vegas, featuring the Sprint Cars and Midget Cars, has practice commencing at 1 pm, followed by qualifying at 4 and racing at 6:30. A driver autograph session is also scheduled at the "Bullring."
