Western Midget Series Resumes At Perris August 18
Defending WorldCom National Midget Car Champion Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw, Wash. repeated his August sweep of the Lincoln, Neb. and Belleville, Kans. races last week, driving the Ford/ASE/Beast/Performance Racing Industry Pink Ford/Beast to victories in Tuesday's race at Eagle Raceway and Saturday's "Belleville Midget Nationals" finale.
Dave Darland emerged from the Lincoln and Belleville events with a 28-point lead over runner-up Jay Drake. Darland finished fourth at Lincoln and won Friday's Belleville prelim over Kahne, then took second behind Kahne Saturday. Drake was third at Lincoln and had finishes of fourth and eighth at Belleville.
Western WorldCom Midget Car point leaders Alex Harris and Danny Ebberts posted their best finishes on the week in Thursday's Belleville prelim, taking third and fifth respectively. Harris leads Ebberts by 11 points going into an August 18 race at Perris, Calif.
The National series resumes this Friday night with a 40-lap race on the 1/4-mile paved oval at Kentucky Speedway in concert with this weekend's Indy Racing Northern Light Series "Belterra Casino Indy 300." The series also is slated to compete Saturday night as part of the "Joe James/Pat O'Connor Classic" USAC doubleheader at the Salem (Ind.) Speedway also featuring the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars. A 30-lap Midget Car and 50-lap Sprint car feature are on tap at the 1/2-mile paved oval following practice at 4 pm and qualifying at 5:30.
Kahne led all 40 laps of Tuesday's race at Eagle Raceway in Lincoln, Neb. to beat Tracy Hines, Jay Drake, Darland and Davey Ray. He also led the final 29 laps of Saturday's $10,000-to-win "Belleville Midget Nationals" finale at the 1/2-mile dirt Belleville oval, beating Darland, Robby Flock, Josh and Ryan Scott. Jerry Coons, Jr. led the first 12 laps but faded to 12th at the checkered flag. Drivers J.J. Yeley, Tracy Hines and Jeff Flesher escaped serious injury in flips on the opening lap of the race.
A.J. Fike led all 25 laps of Thursday's Belleville prelim in his McGladrey & Pullen/Azer Clinic/Weld/Hoosier/Sparco, USA/Bell Helmets Pink Ford/Beast to beat Steve Knepper, Harris, Thomas Meseraull and Ebberts. Darland led all 25 laps of Friday's Belleville prelim to beat Kahne, Yeley, Drake and Matt Westfall.
Kahne thus becomes only the second driver to score back-to-back Belleville Midget Nationals victories. Stan Fox was the first to do it in 1979 and 1980!
