BAKERSFIELD WINNER SCHUTTE THROWS HAT IN RING AS WESTERN MIDGETS HEAD FOR CALISTOGA THIS WEEKEND

Alex Schutte of Redding, Calif. is the latest driver to throw his hat in the ring for this weekend's USAC Western Midget races at the Calistoga (Fairgrounds) Speedway in California. The races Saturday and Sunday nights are part of the track's "Lou Vermeil Classic" which also features the USAC National/Lucas Oil CRA Sprints.

Schutte led only one lap at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway Saturday night but it was the last one! Schutte's victory in the Kruseman Enterprises Lucas Oil/AEC Spike Mopar was his first in the USAC Western Midgets as he took advantage of a last lap tangle between leaders Scott Nail and Garrett Hansen to post the win.

Nail led the first 29 laps before he and fast qualifier and series point leader Hansen tangled in turn three. Josh Ford, Randi Pankratz, Bobby Boone and Chris Gansen rounded out the "top-five" at the checkered flag.

This weekend's Calistoga races are an opportunity for Garrett Hansen to build his lead in the series standings. Hansen is 126 points ahead of Jerome Rodela going into the two events.

Johnny Rodriguez won both Midget features during last year's "Lou Vermeil Classic" but has not competed in this year's series.
