WESTERN MIDGETS "OFF" UNTIL JUNE 11
KAPLAN NOTCHES "FIRST" MIDGET WIN AT BAKERSFIELD

USAC's Western Midget Car Series is on hiatus until resuming June 11 at the Ventura (Calif.) Raceway.

Four-time series champion Robby Flock of Murietta, Calif. extended his series point lead Saturday night despite a sixth-place finish Saturday night at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway behind race winner Ryan Kaplan. Flock takes a 43-point lead over former series champ Steve Paden into the June 11 race.

Kaplan, a three-time feature winner in USAC's Ford Focus Midgets, earned his initial Western Midget win at Bakersfield, leading the final seven laps to beat Tyler Brown, Travis Berryhill, fast qualifier Jerome Rodela and Chris Rahe. Matt Mitchell led the first two laps and Brown led the next 21 before yielding to Kaplan, who hails from Chico, Calif. Wally Pankratz flipped during the feature but escaped injury.
