WESTERN MIDGETS HEAD FOR BAKERSFIELD SATURDAY
RAIN FORCES STOCKTON POSTPONEMENT
The 2005 USAC Western Midget Car Series resumes this Saturday night at the Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway following last Saturday night's postponement of the "Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic" at Stockton 99 Speedway due to heavy rain.
Four-time USAC Western Midget Car Champion Robby Flock of Murrieta, Calif. resumes his quest for his 50th career series feature win at the 1/3-mile dirt oval, which has a 30-lap main event on tap following prelims. Flock won one of the three USAC Midget features at Bakersfield last year. The California Dirt Ford Focus Midgets share Saturday night's billing, with a 20-lapper scheduled.
J.J. Yeley sits atop the Western Midget standings after his "Copper World Classic" victory in February, but Western Midget regulars Dallen McKenney and Steve Paden are currently in the "top-10" and could soar in the standings with a good finish at Bakersfield. Defending series champion Johnny Rodriguez of Elk Grove, Calif. is also slated to make his 2005 series debut at Bakersfield.
Paden, who won two of last year's three Bakersfield Midget features, won USAC's 2003 Western Midget title and McKenney finished sixth in last year's standings. McKenney's best 2004 Bakersfield finish in three starts was a sixth.
The Bakersfield event will be the first in the 2005 farewell tour for 2000 USAC Western Midget Champion Wally Pankratz, who has 445 career feature starts to his credit.
