6th "SUE THIEL CLASSIC" FRIDAY AT DODGE COUNTY; COONS, PICKENS & RAIN TAKE WISCONSIN FEATURES
The USAC National Midget Car Series returns to Wisconsin this Friday for the 6th Mid-State Equipment "Sue Thiel Classic" co-sanctioned race with BMARA at Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam.
Jerry Coons, Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. leads the series back to the Badger State after winning the first of two "National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame Classic" features at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie Saturday. Coons is seeking his second consecutive USAC National Midget crown.
Coons passed Dave Darland on lap 15 and led the final 16 laps of Saturday's 30-lapper in his Speedway Motors/K & N Filters Spike/Stanton Mopar. Darland led the first 14 laps and finished second ahead of Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Danny Stratton and Chuck Gurney Jr.
Sunday night's "Hall of Fame Classic" finale went to Michael Pickens, who led a one-two sweep for New Zealand drivers, thought to be the first in USAC history. Pickens, of Auckland, N.Z., and Brad Mosen, also of Auckland, ran one-two in the 30-lap race, Pickens leading all the way in his Mid-State Power & Equipment/TnT Stone Spike/Esslinger Ford. Coons took third ahead of Brad Kuhn and fast qualifier Brad Loyet. Kevin Swindell was Saturday's fast qualifier.
Friday's race at the Plymouth (Wisc.) Dirt Track was rained out and has been rescheduled for September 7.
